On June 1, House Bill 1253 in Louisiana (formerly House Bill 454) was enacted after the CAP advocated on behalf of pathologists to reduce burdens on forensic autopsy practice.
The impact: The changes help limit administrative burden on pathologists while maintaining sensitivity to families’ wishes.
The backstory: The CAP recognizes the sensitive circumstances behind the bill and respects families’ desire to bury their loved ones with dignity.
- In an April 29 letter to the bill sponsor, we raised concerns about proposed requirements to provide detailed organ inventories within 24 hours, noting they are not consistent with standard forensic practice and could increase workload and distress for families.
- We also raised concerns about requiring justification for organ retention in reports and extending requirements to hospital autopsies.
What changed:
- The CAP worked with the Louisiana State Medical Society to reduce barriers to forensic medical practice.
- The final law requires documentation of organ retention in the forensic autopsy report.
What’s next: The law takes effect on January 1, 2027.
