Dr. Beavis has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to laboratory accreditation through CAP leadership roles, including service as vice chair and chair of the Accreditation and Microbiology Resource Committees and as a member of the Council on Accreditation. She has provided critical guidance on policy development, interpretation, and improvement of accreditation programs that affect laboratory quality and patient care.
Dr. Beavis has served as a team leader or member for nearly 50 CAP inspections in the US and abroad—across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe—supporting the CAP’s global accreditation mission. Through this work, she has not only assessed compliance but also mentored laboratory leaders, strengthened inspection quality, and promoted a culture of continuous improvement.
As a microbiologist, Dr. Beavis is a nationally and internationally recognized authority on laboratory safety and biosafety. She has contributed to guideline development through CLSI and the CDC and has served on high-level advisory panels focused on protecting laboratory workers and patients.
Dr. Beavis has maintained an active academic and clinical career as a professor of pathology at the University of Chicago, as medical director for multiple laboratory services, and as a prolific scholar in clinical microbiology and laboratory quality. Her credibility as an inspector, educator, and policy leader is grounded in daily laboratory practice, ensuring that accreditation standards remain clinically relevant and patient centered.
Through her visionary leadership, global service, and unwavering dedication to laboratory quality and safety, Dr. Beavis exemplifies the highest ideals of the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program Service Award.
