Eric S. Wargotz, MD, FCAP

Dr. Wargotz is the recipient of this honor in recognition of his sustained leadership in advancing public health, strengthening organized medicine, and elevating the role of pathology in service to patients and communities.

Dr. Wargotz is president of MedChi (the Maryland State Medical Society), the first pathologist elected to this position. Over more than three decades, he has combined pathology expertise with broad professional stewardship; he has contributed to the recognition of unique entities, published more than two dozen peer reviewed articles, and presented nationally and internationally. He has also served on the editorial boards of leading pathology journals, further reinforcing his commitment to scientific rigor and education.

In public service, Dr. Wargotz has repeatedly been entrusted with high responsibility civic and governmental roles. He served as a governor’s appointee to the Maryland Board of Physicians Quality Assurance and participated in the COVID-19 workgroup. He now contributes to the Total Cost of Care workgroup, reflecting continued engagement in health system improvement.

As president of Maryland’s Board of County Commissioners, he led successful efforts to establish the state’s first freestanding emergency center, dedicate an urgent care center, and secure the future of emergency medical services for county residents. He also serves the Maryland judiciary as a locally elected judge, further demonstrating sustained public trust and commitment to service.

Dr. Wargotz is a Life Fellow of the CAP and a consistent advocate for the specialty. Colleagues recognize him as a dedicated mentor whose guidance supports trainees and early career physicians. Taken together, his record reflects enduring, wide-ranging public service aligned with the CAP’s mission and the profession’s highest ideals.

Dr. Wargotz is president of MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society; clinical professor emeritus of pathology at the George Washington University School of Medicine; senior staff pathologist and immediate past medical director and chief of pathology at Luminis Health Doctors Community Medical Center; and a judge on the Orphans’ Court of Queen Anne’s County in Centreville, Maryland.
