The CAP joined dozens of cancer, patient advocacy, and health care organizations in a letter urging the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to include $78.4 million for the National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR).
What’s at stake: NPCR-supported registries collect cancer data representing approximately 97% of the US population and help researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and public health officials track cancer trends, identify disparities, and evaluate prevention and screening efforts.
The coalition asked for:
-
$63.4 million to support NPCR’s core cancer surveillance activities.
-
An additional $15 million dedicated to cancer surveillance data modernization.
-
Investments to strengthen real-time reporting capabilities and improve interoperability between cancer registries and health information systems.
Why now: The coalition noted that NPCR funding has remained essentially flat for several years while personnel, technology, and data infrastructure costs have continued to rise.
