CDC begins agency transformation initiative

09/15/2026
Advocacy Update

The CDC has launched an enterprise transformation project known as CDC Voyager, an initiative agency leaders say is intended to help chart the agency’s future direction. The project is unfolding amid ongoing scrutiny of the agency’s handling of high-profile public health issues, including recent measles-related deaths.

According to reports, CDC staff raised questions about how the initiative could affect the agency’s mission, workforce, and programs. Staff also discussed burnout due to significant workforce reductions.

What we know: CDC leadership indicated the project will focus on evaluating agency priorities with a sole focus on emergency public health responses and infectious diseases. This focus would align with the plans to create a new “Make America Healthy Again”-oriented agency. Court cases have paused the broader reorganization of the Department of Health and Human Services.

What’s next:

  • CDC leaders say additional listening sessions will continue through December, and updates will be issued as the project develops.
