Northfield, Ill. (August 19, 2026) — The College of American Pathologists (CAP) has reached a significant milestone with just over 8,500 accredited laboratories worldwide, reinforcing its position as a global leader in laboratory quality and accreditation. CAP accreditation is recognized for its rigorous standards, peer-based inspections, and commitment to continuous improvement in laboratory medicine.
“Reaching 8,500 accredited laboratories reflects the dedication of pathologists and laboratory professionals worldwide to delivering high-quality patient care,” said CAP President Qihui “Jim” Zhai, MD, FCAP. “This milestone demonstrates the value laboratories place on CAP accreditation as a trusted benchmark for quality and excellence.”
For more than 50 years, the CAP’s Laboratory Accreditation Program has helped laboratories improve quality, reduce risk, and strengthen patient care through rigorous inspections conducted by practicing laboratory professionals. The program continues to evolve alongside advances in laboratory medicine, technology, and regulatory requirements.
In addition to accreditation, the CAP supports more than 23,000 laboratories worldwide through proficiency testing/external quality assessment programs, quality improvement resources, cancer protocols, and evidence-based guidelines.
