Pathology in the Mountains – June 24–27, 2024
The 2024 Pathology in the Mountains program will focus on cytopathology, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and head and neck/endocrine pathology. Sessions will take place during the morning hours, leaving afternoons free for participants to explore the venue with their families or colleagues and take advantage of its many activities.
Features of Pathology in the Mountains include:
- Four half-days of learning, with an afternoon start on Monday to accommodate late check-ins.
- Morning education sessions Tuesday through Thursday with afternoons open for downtime.
- 45- to 50-minute presentations with time to allow for interaction and Q&A.
- Ample opportunity to network with faculty and fellow program participants in a relaxed environment.
- 16 CME credits.
Note: Both US and Canada Immigration Laws require all travelers to have a valid passport.
Objectives
As an outcome of this conference, participants will be able to:
- Identify, assess, and diagnose neoplastic and non-neoplastic entities and their mimickers in cytopathology, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and head and neck/endocrine pathology.
- Be aware of diagnostic pitfalls that the expert faculty and peers have encountered in everyday practice.
- Manage common diagnostic challenges.
- Apply recent evidence-based guidelines and developments in ancillary testing to day-to-day work.
- Demonstrate their own knowledge and comprehension via activities and audience participation.

Dr. Lester Thompson has more than 30 years of experience in Head and Neck and Endocrine Pathology, starting at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) in Washington, DC, and continuing as a consultant pathologist in southern California. He has over 420 published articles, has published 12 books, was the founding editor of Head and Neck Pathology journal, is the Series Champion for the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting for head and neck and endocrine organs, and is an editor for the 5th edition WHO Blue Books on Head and Neck Tumors and Endocrine Organ Tumors.
Dr. Wojcik is the Helen M. and Raymond M. Galvin Professor of Pathology and Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. She is also the Regional Laboratory Medical Director at Loyola Medicine. Previously she served as a Director of Cytopathology. In addition, before taking over the chairmanship position in 2007, she was the Director of the AP/CP Residency Program and Cytopathology Fellowship Program. Dr. Wojcik is a Past President of the American Society of Cytopathology and, currently, she is the President of the College of American Pathologists Foundation. Dr. Wojcik graduated from Medical University of Gdansk, Poland and completed residency in anatomical and clinical pathology at Wayne State University in Detroit, and cytopathology fellowship at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Dr. Wojcik has been a frequent invited speaker at numerous international, national and regional forums. Most of her presentations are dealing with recent advances in urine cytology. She co-led international efforts to standardize reporting of urinary cytology that culminated with publication of The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology. She has authored and co-authored over two hundred articles, book chapters and abstracts. She was awarded a number of highly prestigious honors including the Loyola University “Faculty of the Year” Award, Humanism in Medicine Award from the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, Excellence in Education Award from the American Society of Cytopathology, L.C. Tao Educator of the Year Award from the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology, Distinguished Service Award from the College of American Pathologists and, most recently, she has received a highly prestigious Papanicolaou Award from the American Society of Cytopathology.
Dr. Graham graduated from medical school at the University of the West Indies in Kingston Jamaica, and completed his residency and three fellowships in Molecular, Surgical and GI/Liver Pathology at the Mayo Clinic (Minnesota).
Dr. Graham is the author of over 170 medical publications, principally in the areas of GI/Liver pathology and molecular pathology, contributor to book chapters in pathology and surgery texts including the 5th Edition of the WHO Classification of Digestive System Tumors and the inaugural Edition of the WHO Classification of Pediatric Tumors and has lectured nationally on topics at the intersection of GI/Liver and molecular pathology. Rondell is head of the Section of GI/Liver pathology at the Mayo Clinic and is the Executive Vice Chair of Academics and People in the Division of Anatomic Pathology. He serves on the editorial board of Modern Pathology, is an Associated Editor for two journals and reviews for another two-dozen biomedical journals.
In his spare time, Dr. Graham enjoys traveling with his family and is an avid supporter of Real Madrid FC.
Elizabeth Montgomery, MD trained at Walter Army Medical Center in Pathology. She is currently Professor of Pathology and Vice Chair, Academic Development, at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
She has published numerous articles and books on gastrointestinal and soft tissue pathology and has trained numerous fellows in these disciplines. She is the Editor in Chief of Innovative Science Press.
She continues to be a highly sought speaker worldwide.
Andres Matoso, MD, is an Associate Professor of Pathology, Urology and Oncology, and the Director of the Immunohistochemistry Laboratory at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Matoso received his MD from the University of Buenos Aires in 2002 followed by urology training also in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Upon moving to the United States, he was a postdoctoral research fellow in cancer biology at Cornell University. Subsequently, he did his residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Brown University and fellowships in Gastrointestinal and liver pathology also at Brown University and in urologic pathology at Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Matoso has been a faculty at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland since 2017 where he is part of the urologic pathology consult service which reviews approximately 10,000 consults/year from the United States and around the world. His research interests include molecular alterations associated with bladder cancer development and progression, the use of enhanced cystoscopy to detect CIS, and characterization of rare urologic tumors.
Dr. Matoso lectures widely in the United States and internationally on urologic pathology. He has published over 135 peer-reviewed articles, seven book chapters including chapters in the WHO Classification of Urologic and Pediatric Tumors. He has also published one textbook, Survival Guide in Prostate Pathology, and received many awards for his work.

This program is for CAP members only. The cost of registration includes program tuition, social event on Monday evening, and continental breakfast served Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Once you register for the program, you will receive a confirmation and a link to make your hotel reservations.

Our Pathology in the Mountains program is at Four Seasons Resort Whistler, British Columbia, Canada.
Guests can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, scenic tours, guided tours, rock climbing, fishing, water sports, golf, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, fitness center, and spa.
Note: Activities may incur an additional cost to participate. Four Seasons Concierge Services can assist you to make arrangements.

CAD $535.00 + $25.00 Resort Fee + 16% tax - Deluxe Four Seasons Executive Suite
*Run of House room category includes a combination of Resort King, Superior King, Deluxe King Rooms, and Premier King Rooms, and room choices will be based on hotel availability. Resort King Rooms and Superior Rooms can only hold a maximum of 2 adults per room. Should there be a request for a third adult, a Deluxe Room with a pull-out sofa will be necessary.
Sleeping room rates are based on one or two adults per room. A charge of $50.00 per room per night will be assessed for a third adult, plus applicable taxes and fees. No additional charge for children under the age of 18 years old if staying in the parents’ room.
Resort Fee: A daily Resort Fee of $25.00, plus applicable taxes, will be applied to all reservations. This fee is in addition to the room rate per night. The Resort Fee includes seasonal Resort experiences such as fitness classes and on-property amenities.
- Children under 18: There is no additional charge for children under 18 years of age staying with an adult.
- Additional adult (over two): There will be a charge of $15.00 per night plus taxes.

- Cancellations: Individual guest rooms must be canceled 14 days or more before arrival to receive a full refund.
Transportation
The Four Seasons Resort Whistler is located 84 miles, 2.5 hours, by car from Vancouver International Airport (map/directions).
Whistler Shuttle offers shuttle service between Vancouver International Airport and the Four Seasons Whistler. Advance reservations are required.
Contact Four Seasons concierge at 904-635-3400 for assistance with private car transfers to and from Whistler.
Rental cars are available at the airport. It is recommended you book your car rental as soon as you make your air reservations.
Hotel overnight valet parking is available at $48 CAD + tax per night. Hourly parking for daily attendees is $5.00 CAD + tax/hour per car. Rates are subject to change.
Cancellation Policy
Should you need to cancel your registration for this program, please contact the CAP as soon as possible. The CAP will apply your payment to a future program or refund your registration fee, less a $100.00 processing fee, up to two weeks prior to the program; refunds after that date will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The CAP reserves the right to cancel any CME workshop without prior notice for insufficient preregistration or any other reason. The CAP is not responsible for participant airline or hotel cancellation penalties or any other losses incurred as a result of cancellation.
