The College of American Pathologists (CAP) Outstanding Educator Award, established in 2018, recognizes outstanding performance and significant contributions in the advancement of professional development opportunities for pathologists and laboratory professionals. It is presented to an individual who has consistently demonstrated outstanding performance as faculty for a CAP education activity and/or has made outstanding contributions in the development of education activities for pathologists and/or laboratory professionals.
Frederick L. Kiechle, MD, PhD, FCAP
The College of American Pathologists presents Frederick L. Kiechle, MD, PhD, FCAP, with the 2023 CAP Outstanding Educator of the Year Award in recognition of his commitment to educating pathologists through various media, especially publications.
Dr. Kiechle is an accomplished and long-time educator and contributor to the CAP. Through his writings and teaching engagements, Dr. Kiechle has reached a vast audience, sharing his passion for clinical pathology. He has been involved in writing the CAP phlebotomy instruction manual So You Want to Collect a Blood Specimen for the past three decades, serving as editor for more than 10 editions. Over the years, this manual has undergone significant changes and improvements and continues to be a bestseller, with over 300 copies sold in 2022 alone.
Dr. Kiechle is a renowned educator and lecturer in the field of chemistry. He has served as editor of the question-and-answer section of CAP Today—consistently the most frequently read section—for more than two decades. He also organized and staged the first clinical molecular pathology course, The Beaumont DNA Conference, which is ongoing with proceedings published in the Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.
Furthermore, Dr. Kiechle has just completed a text for CAP Publications on disruptive technologies and is working on a multi-volume text on chemistry analytes that will serve as a go-to reference for pathologists and other medical professionals. Dr. Kiechle continues to provide consistent and outstanding education through various media.
Dr. Kiechle is the chief medical officer for Boca Biolistics Reference Laboratory in Pompano Beach, Florida.
