2025 CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program Service Award

Established in Honor of Major General Joseph M. Blumberg, MD, FCAP

The College of American Pathologists (CAP) Laboratory Accreditation Program Service Award honors the memory and work of Major General Joseph M. Blumberg, MD, FCAP, and recognizes a member of the CAP who has contributed exceptional and outstanding service to the CAP’s Laboratory Accreditation Program. 

William A. Rock Jr., MD, FCAP 

The College of American Pathologists honors William A. Rock Jr., MD, FCAP, with the 2025 CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program Service Award in recognition of his extensive contributions to coagulation, hematology, transfusion medicine, and point-of-care testing through numerous publications and speaking engagements.

Dr. Rock began his service with the CAP in 1976 as an inspector team leader, serving as a CAP deputy commissioner for the Laboratory Accreditation Inter-Region since 1994. Over the course of his career, he’s conducted more than 175 inspections, contributing substantially to maintaining a high standard of laboratory accreditation.

Dr. Rock received his medical degree from Louisiana State University (LSU) Medical School in New Orleans, Louisiana. He completed his pathology residency in the LSU Charity Hospital program and was later recruited to serve as director of the Hematology Laboratory in 1976.  

In 1989, he was recruited to be the medical director of the clinical laboratory at the University of Mississippi in Jackson. He was also a professor of pathology for the school of medicine, clinical laboratory sciences, and graduate studies until he retired in 2012. Dr. Rock served as the medical director of the hematology/coagulation laboratory, perinatal and point of care laboratories, and director of the medical mall laboratory and the Lexington Hospital laboratory.

In 1970, Dr. Rock joined the US Army Reserve at the 4010th US Army Hospital in New Orleans and was activated for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and retired as Lieutenant Colonel in 2002.

Dr. Rock is an emeritus professor in the department of pathology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi.
