2025 CAP Lifetime Achievement Award

Established in 2006, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes and honors our members who have made a broad and positive impact on the profession through contributions to one or more areas of the organization over an extended period. 

Kyle T. Bradley, MD, FCAP

The College of American Pathologists presents Kyle T. Bradley, MD, FCAP, with the 2025 CAP Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions and service to the CAP hematopathology program during his tenure as chair of the Hematopathology Committee.  

Dr. Bradley’s involvement with the CAP began during his residency, when he served as a junior member of the Cancer Committee. He later contributed to the Cancer Protocol Panel and the Hematology and Clinical Microscopy (HCM) Committee, advancing the field of hematology through his work on proficiency testing, educational initiatives, and publications.  

While serving on the HCM Committee, Dr. Bradley supported the creation of the Hematopathology Workgroup, which later became the Hematopathology Committee. As its first chair, he provided exceptional leadership, developed and regularly updated key program templates, and served as a trusted resource for hematopathology-related questions, ensuring continuous improvement of the program.

Dr. Bradley also represented the Hematology Cluster on the Council on Scientific Affairs (CSA), where he promoted collaboration across committees. He contributed significantly through his work with the Curriculum Committee and supported the formation of a new CSA committee, further strengthening the CAP’s scientific and educational efforts.  

Throughout his career, Dr. Bradley has demonstrated a deep commitment to the mission of the CAP through his expertise and leadership across multiple initiatives. His work has left a lasting influence on both the organization and the field of hematopathology.  

Dr. Bradley is a professor of hematopathology at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.  


Michael B. Cohen, MD, FCAP

The College of American Pathologists presents Michael B. Cohen, MD, FCAP, with the 2025 CAP Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his contributions to anatomic pathology, particularly in cytopathology, and his effective research-funded projects.

Dr. Cohen has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed journal articles, published books, hosted podcasts, and delivered many presentations. He’s also a vocal advocate for addressing diagnostic errors in medicine and has shaped the careers of many through his mentorship. Known for his thoughtful insights and dedication to teaching, Dr. Cohen stands out as a mentor who offers fresh perspectives on complex issues. Within the CAP, he’s widely respected and frequently sought after for his wisdom and advice.

As co-leader of the CAP’s Wellness Project Team, Dr. Cohen plays a key role in advancing initiatives that support pathologists’ wellbeing. He’s been instrumental in developing membership surveys, planning for the annual meeting, and enhancing the Wellness Resource Center on cap.org. His commitment and contributions have had a meaningful influence on the daily lives of practicing pathologists.

Throughout his career, Dr. Cohen has inspired many by his integrity, mentorship, and no-nonsense approach. His influence and contributions have left a lasting mark on the profession.  

Dr. Cohen is an emeritus professor at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, and Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. 


Carmen R. Gomez-Fernandez, MD, FCAP 

The College of American Pathologists presents Carmen R. Gomez-Fernandez, MD, FCAP, with the 2025 CAP Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her dedication to teaching, mentorship, and patient care. A highly respected pathologist, Dr. Gomez-Fernandez is known for her integrity, compassion, leadership, and diagnostic excellence. She tirelessly supports her colleagues, trainees, and staff, creating an environment of respect, equity, and open communication.

Dr. Gomez-Fernandez has demonstrated a deep commitment to mentorship; she nurtures the personal and professional growth of students and residents, while continually seeking ways to improve her department and the broader field of pathology. Her innovative spirit is exemplified by her recent initiative to enable direct conversations between patients and pathologists about test results.

An advocate at the state and local levels, Dr. Gomez-Fernandez is a champion for pathology as a career and has earned numerous research accolades. Admired by all who work with and learn from her, she embodies the values of lifelong learning, service, and excellence in pathology.

Dr. Gomez-Fernandez is a professor of pathology and vice chair of education in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida.  


Flavia N. Rosado, MD, FCAP 

The College of American Pathologists presents Flavia N. Rosado, MD, FCAP, with a CAP Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her exceptional leadership as chair of the Diagnostic Immunology and Flow Cytometry Committee (DIFCC). Her contributions to CAP proficiency testing (PT) programs, laboratory accreditation checklists, and education have had a lasting impact on the laboratory community.  

As chair of DIFCC, which oversees two distinct but related disciplines, Dr. Rosado has provided strategic leadership by fostering collaboration and communication. She implemented a model that designates a lead for the immunology cluster and regular team meetings to ensure oversight and planning across both areas.

Dr. Rosado led the development and implementation of a standardized process for flow cytometry PT case development, review, and finalization. This process improved efficiencies, minimized error potential, and enhanced the participant’s experience. She also initiated a focused, retrospective review process for discrepant results to drive continuous quality improvement.

Under her leadership, the committee has revised and clarified 25 checklist items related to flow cytometry and immunology and has two CAP Press benchtop guides currently in progress. Dr. Rosado has encouraged ongoing innovation in PT programs, with 33 STEP proposals already considered or approved during her tenure and 11 currently under review.  

Dr. Rosado’s dedication to excellence in diagnostic immunology and flow cytometry continues to elevate CAP standards and improve patient care through quality laboratory practice.

Dr. Rosado is the chair of pathology at Independence Health Systems—North Branch and medical director in the Department of Pathology and Clinical Laboratories at Butler Memorial Hospital in Butler, Pennsylvania.
