2025 CAP Resident Advocate Award

The College of American Pathologists (CAP) Resident Advocate Award, established in 1990, recognizes outstanding contributions to and support of pathology residents and fellows. Nominees are submitted by the Residents Forum Executive Committee. 

C. Leilani Valdes, MD, MBA, FCAP 

The College of American Pathologists honors C. Leilani Valdes, MD, MBA, FCAP, with the 2025 Resident Advocate Award in recognition of her tireless dedication to serving pathology residents as a mentor, advisor, and advocate.  

As the advisor to the CAP Residents Forum Executive Committee, Dr. Valdes provided invaluable mentorship and guidance, offering insights into organized pathology and helping residents navigate professional advocacy, leadership, and career development. Her approachable and supportive style fostered an inclusive and empowering environment, encouraging resident-led initiatives and strengthening the Residents Forum’s mission to support engagement.

Beyond her advisory role, Dr. Valdes has actively championed resident interests within the CAP and nationwide—representing resident education in policy discussions, promoting trainee involvement in professional societies, and ensuring that residents have access to the resources and support they need to succeed. Open and accessible, she’s been a guiding force and a trusted source of career advice, application reviews, and counsel for residents transitioning into practice.

Dr. Valdes’ contributions to the CAP are also significant, including her tenure as Governor on the Board of Governors and chair of the Council on Membership and Professional Development. In addition, she’s been actively involved in several CAP committees, including as chair of the Professional and Community Engagement Committee and as a member of the Economic Affairs/Measure Development Committee. She’s also a prominent leader in the Texas Society of Pathologists, currently serving as president and representing Victoria-Goliad-Jackson Counties at the Texas Medical Association House of Delegates.

Board-certified in anatomic, clinical, and dermatopathology, Dr. Valdes is the medical director of Regional Pathology Associates and chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine for Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, Texas.
