2021 CAP Pathology Advancement Award - PathElective.com

The College of American Pathologists established the CAP Pathology Advancement Award in 2013 to recognize a person or team who demonstrates components of foresight, resolve, and untiring commitment to both evolutionary and revolutionary undertakings that advance the positioning of the pathologist in the house of medicine and the delivery of safer patient care. It recognizes efforts that are neither easy nor obvious, and the recipient will often be a change agent.

The College of American Pathologists presents the founders and co-founders of PathElective.com with the 2021 CAP Pathology Advancement Award. Their lightning-fast creation of this novel project demonstrates the utmost innovation of thought, flexibility, and agility of action, and the team exemplified perseverance of the highest order in its undertaking.

The website PathElective.com was created in response to the shut down of in-person educational activities in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This site was the brainchild of Kamran M. Mirza, MD, PhD, FCAP, associate professor of pathology and medical education and vice-chair of education in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, as well as Cullen M. Lilley, MS, who is currently studying at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and is the president of its pathology student interest group, SCOPE. Together, they developed the site as a modular and interactive space to disseminate pathology education, for free, to anyone who wanted access to teaching material.

The duo teamed up with six co-founders and an amazing team of more than 50 faculty members to create educational modules in both anatomic and clinical pathology. The framework of the modules includes goals and objectives, tips on how to be successful in the lesson, a pre-quiz assessment, a list of items (videos) to watch, optional reading material, and a post-lesson quiz. Since July 2020 (when the site went live), there have been 81,000 visits, leading to 388,000 page views by 37,000 unique users. The site is routinely accessed hundreds of times every day by users from across the world. The free and global access to this knowledge has truly advanced the accessibility of diagnostic excellence, which in turn will lead to better patient care.
